Rev. Eric Swanfeldt, of Uncasville, passed in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017.
Born May 21, 1932, in Cambridge, Mass., to Eric Folke and Leola Lawrence Swanfeldt. He graduated from Harvard University, Class of 1954 and Harvard Divinity School. Ordained in the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, he has served pastorates in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut for the past 55 years.
Eric's entire life/ministry was committed to peace and justice. From walking in Selma, Alabama in the 60s to fostering a United Methodist Conference relationship with the Iglesia de Cristo Church in Managua, Nicaragua - earning him a key to that city and an honorary doctorate in humanities from La Universidad Evangelica Nicaraguens. Eric called us to be a people of justice and peace. Walking from church to church thru New England he, and those who walked with him, shared the story of this people of faith and the reality of the third world...walking because the poor, everywhere, walk.
Eric leaves his wife of 60 years, Jean Van Buskirk; his four children, Cheryl Howitt of Corning, N.Y., Eric Scott (Karen) of Uncasville, Mark Peter (Cindy), Lisbon and Jill Swanfeldt Laleg (Makhlouf), Montreal, Canada; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Kristen Lawrence Sergienko of Tacoma, Wash.
