Please join us in congratulating Lawrence Jay, executive director of Rolling Ridge Retreat and Conference Center
, who has earned his credentials as a Certified Conference Center Professional (CCCP) from the International Association of Conference Center Administrators (IACCA).
Jay and four others in the certificate class of 2020 were part of an online ceremony on Nov. 12. Jay participated from Rolling Ridge along with IACCA faculty member and mentor Jess Shload, who presented Jay with his certificate.
Jay came to Rolling Ridge in January 2017.
“As a new director, IACCA provided me with the skills and information I needed to lead in all aspects of retreat ministry,” Jay said. “The network also created a supportive community of colleagues whom I could reach out to. During COVID, especially, I have appreciated the insights and suggestions about how to make hard decisions amid unprecedented challenges.”
Rev. Erica Robinson-Johnson, Director of Connectional Ministries, who oversees the Camp and Retreat Ministry, said, “I celebrate this milestone in Lawrence's continuing education as a leader in retreat ministry and already see the fruits in his leadership among us and across the connection. The New England Conference is blessed by his many gifts.”
IACCA issued its first certifications in 1981. The Class of 2020 is the last class for IACCA, which will conclude operations at the end of this year.
As part of its Course of study in Conference Center Administration, certificate candidates completed a final project. Jay describes his project here:
My IACCA final capstone project focused on the future scenarios for Rolling Ridge, based on our history, our current challenges, strengths, and potential.
In 1997, the vision for the Ridge to become an adult retreat center was first articulated. By 2017, that vision became our reality. The challenge before us in 2020 is to articulate the vision for the ministry that will guide us for the next 20 years.
The answer lies in our programming as Rolling Ridge seeks to be a safe and sacred space of deep listening and spiritual companionship in the Christian contemplative tradition. This is now occurring through our online programs and needs to guide our decisions about onsite operations so that the Ridge can survive the pandemic.
