Churches invited to share bulk donation of hand sanitizer

September 06, 2020

Through UMCOR, the New England Conference has secured a bulk donation of hand sanitizer that was made to FEMA to be distributed for free.

The barrels have been delivered to the conference’s four camp and retreat centers in New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The donor has requested that there be no public acknowledgment of their donation; they ask that we share our 440 gallons at each location with community groups and other nearby volunteer agencies.

Even though many churches aren't opening for in-person worship right now, it's important to pick-up the hand sanitizer as soon as possible, before the supply runs out.

Conference Disaster Response Coordinator Barbara Burnside will be notifying her Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster (VOAD) partners of the supply, but churches should feel free to notify their community contacts as well.

To pick hand sanitizer

Recipients must bring their own sturdy containers. Please be aware that hand sanitizer is flammable because of the alcohol content; a gallon weighs about 8 lbs.

The supply should be stored indoors at a temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

The barrels’ pumps distribute liquid quickly once they are primed. It may require one or two priming pumps before the flow starts.

Wanakee 75 Upper New Hampton Road, Meredith, NH 03253. The hand sanitizer will be available in the main parking lot on the east side of Upper New Hampton Road, across from the big red farmhouse. Feel free to call 603-279-7950 or email mail@wanakee.org if you have any questions.

Camp Mechuwana (use 91 Holmes Road, Winthrop, ME 04364 as the address for GPS). The camp is putting one barrel at a time right outside the district superintendent’s office located at the camp. Follow the signs that say Mid-Maine District (the new Many Waters District signage has not yet been installed).

Camp Aldersgate & Retreat Center, 1043 Snake Hill Road, North Scituate, RI 02857. Pick-up hours are from 9 am to 4 pm and do not require a reservation or call ahead. Once arriving at Aldersgate, continue straight down the road to the parking lot on the right. The distribution station is ahead in the covered pavilion beyond the parking lot.

Rolling Ridge Conference & Retreat Center, 660 Great Pond Road, North Andover, MA 01845. Pick-up hours are from 8 am to 4 pm. If the rope is across the drive, unclip it and proceed, but PLEASE be sure to reattach the driveway rope before leaving. Follow signs to the parking lot and take the gravel drive to the right, marked “Handicapped Parking.” Proceed past the parking along the side of the building to the tent with the blue hand sanitizer barrels under it. Then take the drive around to the right, which takes you back to the main drive out.  If you have any concerns or issues, text Greg, the facilities manager at 978-273-2680, as cell service isn’t great at the Ridge, but texts do get delivered.
