Changing Seasons at United Methodist Economic Ministries (UMEM)

As the seasons change from Summer to “Back-to-School” and then into Autumn, so also does life change at UMEM.  We are thankful for the many donations that make UMEM’s Backpack Program such an essential part of “back-to-school” preparations in the greater Salem, ME area.  This year, 115 children and youth in the area received new backpacks, school supplies, underwear, socks, and sneakers, personalized for each of them.  This year, new hand-knitted hats were included, as well.  Pictured are the piles of supplies ready for distribution, and just a few of the group of fifteen or so wonderful folks from Saratoga Springs UMC (in upstate New York) who travel to UMEM for their annual mission trip in order to help with this and other projects at the site and in surrounding communities.  We are grateful!!

Also as the seasons change, we are thankful for answered prayers.  On September 1, Helen Pinkham became the next UMEM Executive Director.  Helen is a Salem, ME resident, and a long-term customer and supporter of the Thrift Store and Food Pantry.  Helen is excited to lead UMEM forward, building upon its already-vital role in the communities it serves.  Please “watch this space” for a more in-depth interview with Helen.  And as we welcome Helen, we also give thanks for the years of leadership provided by our outgoing Executive Director, Rev. Michele St. Cyr, who has returned to full-time local church ministry.

Like many of you, UMEM faces uncertainty in the face of rising costs of the most essential needs – heating oil, electricity, food.  Donations are welcomed on-line at our website, https://www.umeconomicministry.com.  Donations may also be made through New England Conference Advance #691.  Your continued support is vital, and much appreciated.

We continue to live into these words of the apostle Paul:  “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth…For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building” [1 Corinthians 3:6, 9].
