Rev. John Blackadar at the UMCOR donations trailer at Annual Conference.
April 19, 2019
If your church is planning to or has been busy creating hygiene kits, school kits or cleaning buckets for UMCOR’s response efforts, we have one easy drop-off location: Annual Conference. Kits can be dropped off onsite at Annual Conference between June 12-15, 2019.
Kits and buckets are in demand now as severe weather and tornadoes hit the Southeast in April; the Midwest faces continued flooding, and the spring snow melt progresses here in the Northeast.
Rev. John Blackadar will again have the disaster trailer available to collect your donations for delivery to one of our conference HUBs, where they will be verified and shipped to an UMCOR depot.
Completed kits or buckets or any leftover components can be brought to the trailer, which will be in the employee parking lot off Pleasant Street, behind the
Seeking volunteers to staff Donations Trailer
If you’re going to be at the 2019 Annual Conference session, and/or are willing to come help with accepting churches’ donations at the disaster trailer, you will be able to sign up to volunteer in blocks of 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Donations will be accepted from 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and usually not during conference sessions (a schedule will be sent to interested volunteers for sign-up).
The trailer supervision involves:
• Accepting churches’ donations of various kinds of UMCOR kits (cleaning buckets, health, sewing, layette kits, and school bags, etc.) and any leftover supplies,
• periodically repacking and rearranging trailer contents to keep things organized for easy transportation later,
• accepting monetary donations associated with the kits/buckets,
• talking to church representatives about UMCOR (FAQ will be provided).
If you are interested in volunteering, contact Barbara Burnside
Doubletree by Hilton Manchester Downtown (the site of Annual Conference; formerly the Radisson). (Volunteers are needed to help staff the trailer; see right).
Use the UPDATED relief-kit content and assembly instructions on UMCOR’s Relief-Supply webpage to pack the items necessary for cleaning buckets, school and hygiene kits.
Important information about checks: There has been much confusion about how to include checks for toothpaste, sponges or shipping donations. (We recently found a check from 2017 in a shipment of buckets).
UMCOR asks that no cash be sent or put in kits. One check for all a church’s kits/buckets should be made out to UMCOR Sager Brown.
For kits delivered to one of the NEUMC collection sites or to Annual Conference, the check should be placed in an envelope attached securely to the outside of a kit or box of kits along with the packing list.
This way, we also know how many kits or buckets each church made.
Alternatively, checks made out to UMCOR Sager Brown can be sent directly to Sager Brown at the address below. Be sure to include a copy of the packing list, the name of the church, the church address, and the number and type of kit(s) the donation represents.
