The New England Conference is pleased to announce that Gricelda Betsabé “Betsy” Careaga G. is the new Coordinator of Hispanic/Latino Ministries. She began her new role on Feb. 1, 2015.
Careaga is a candidate for a Master’s of Divinity degree at Boston University School of Theology. She will be working 10-12 hours a week; splitting her time between the Conference
Center in Lawrence and visits to Conference’s Hispanic/Latino ministries.
Careaga takes over for Emma Escobar, who left the position in May 2014.
“We are excited to welcome Betsy to this critical role in our Conference,” said Board of Hispanic/Latino Ministry Co-Chair the Rev. Geisa Matos-Machuca. “Her qualifications and dedication to the mission and vision of the Conference’s Hispanic/Latino Ministry and to that of The United Methodist Church will be true blessings to New England.”
As coordinator, Careaga will connect with Hispanic/Latino ministries to organize events and establish programs with the goal of finding new ways to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
She will be the steward of the vision for the Hispanic/Latino Ministry and ensure there is clear communication among the ministries and between them and the Conference, the Jurisdiction and the General Church.
Careaga, a native of Texas, graduated Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth with a BA in Spanish in 2014. Her work for the Church includes working with youth and in other roles at local churches and contributing to the Hispanic National Plan; through that she had the opportunity to work with the youth from across the Rio Grande Conference.
