About our trainers

Conference Disaster Response & Mission Coordinator, Barbara Burnside is an UMCOR trainer, the part-time Disaster Response & Missions Coordinator for the six-state region that is the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church (since Sept. 2012) and she sits on the Northeast Jurisdiction’s UMVIM board.  She recently completed the part-time position of Sandy Recovery Volunteer Coordinator for the New York Annual Conference. For 18 years, Barbara volunteered as an orientation and team leader with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) and was a member of its leadership council in Ridgefield, CT. She is serving in Texas for Hurricane Harvey response and also has served on mission teams during Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy recovery, in VT for Hurricane Irene recovery and on Salt Cay in the Turks & Caicos repairing a 150-year-old church ravaged by several hurricanes. She has completed the UM Volunteers in Mission team leader and ERT training, as well as UMCOR’s Disaster Spiritual and Emotional Care leader and Connecting Neighbors trainings – all of which she now teaches.

Tim McCleary is a badged UMCOR ERT trainer (now being mentored to teach the UMVIM course, as well).  He has served in Missions and Outreach projects with Carter Memorial as a layperson and has been a leader or participant in many trips over the past 15 years in both early response and rebuild operations. Service opportunities have been both locally and nationally focused. Tim led a group to Manos Juntas in Rio Bravo, Mexico in July 2017 and then to Swanton, VT after ice jam flooding in early 2018. He has served on early response teams in both Biloxi (Hurricane Katrina) and New Jersey (Superstorm Sandy). Tim also founded the Needham Interfaith Habitat, an organization that raised the funding for a Habitat home ($250,000). Working with town officials, this group identified and acquired land for a home for a qualifying low-income family.  Needham House was built and dedicated in 2008.
