Music Ministries Director Bridgewater United Methodist Church (35 School Street, Bridgewater, MA 02324) Qualifications: - A degree in music or working towards one is preferred but not required. - Candidates will be required to audition by participating in a Sunday service and must show a proficiency in singing and teaching parts effectively, as well as be able to play keyboard/piano. Aptitude in playing the organ is helpful and recommended, but not required. - A willingness to become familiar with religious music, including popular, contemporary, and traditional praise/music and worship songs by various Christian composers, musicians and groups. - Willingness to collaboratively with the pastor and worship committee. - Be a team player and an effective communicator with good organizational skills. Responsibilities: - Be prepared to lead all musical portions of regular weekly worship services on Sundays, Christmas Eve, during Holy Week and other special worship services. It is the responsibility of the Music Director to secure a replacement for worship/other services when she/he/they will knowingly be unavailable. - Recruit, rehearse, and lead a choir and any accompanying musicians for Sunday morning worship. - Have a regular rehearsal at least once a week lasting at least an hour. Day and time to be determined by the Music Director. - Select choir anthems in keeping with the Christian year and worship themes, in consultation with the Pastor. This includes but is not limited to using the United Methodist Hymnal, The Faith We Sing, Worship & Song, and other UMC collections. - Provide accompaniment for the choir. - Provide information to the church office on music selections by Wednesday of each week. - Work within a budget approved by the Church Council. - Be willing to provide music for special services such as funerals and weddings. Compensation: - Compensation is ranged between $150 and $200 per week according to the candidate's experience and proficiency. - Weddings and special occasions will follow the church’s fee schedule of $250 per event, and will be in addition to the already determined weekly compensation. Vacation/Sick Time: - As a rule, time off is without pay and must be scheduled in advance where possible, in consultation with the Pastor. The Music Director will secure a replacement when she/he/they will be absent. - Vacation time is limited to two (2) Sundays per year, without pay, unless other arrangements have been agreed to by the Pastor, in consultation with the Chair of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). Specific vacation time must be agreed upon by SPRC. Evaluation: - The position is for an initial 6-month contract. The Pastor will endeavor to provide feedback to the Music Director throughout the contracted period. - A formal performance evaluation and job description review will be done at the 6-month mark and then annually in the fall prior to the annual Church Conference, in consultation with the Chair of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee, at which time the contract will be up for renewal. Supervision: - The Music Director enjoys a considerable amount of operational freedom, but still must work collaboratively with the appointed Pastor. - If disagreements arise that are not resolvable between the Pastor and the Music Director, such disagreements may be referred to the Staff/Parish Relations Committee for resolution. - The Music Director is an employee of the church and as such reports directly to the Staff/Parish Relations Committee.
