Go Green, Save Money, Save the Earth: Some wins to celebrate

When we are looking to make a difference, the work can be challenging, but joy is there. As Christians, we can trust that God gives us hope and a joy that is not dependent on circumstances, but on God’s love, presence, and guidance wherever we are. So this month let’s look at some wins and celebrate:

  • In addition to people asking me questions, I am now beginning to hear about churches that have done their energy audits and even installed heat pumps!

  • We have eight United Methodist EarthKeepers. Three live in Vermont and four live in Maine. So we joyfully invite New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut to think about adding EarthKeepers in your state. No matter where you live, this is a great program. It gives you solid training. Deadline to apply for the next EarthKeeper training is Feb. 132023. It asks you to have an environmental project in mind as you apply. For more info and the application go to: https://umcmission.org/earthkeepers/

  • The Conference Board of Church and Society is forming a Creation Care Task force with disciples from each of our six New England states. This group will work with the newly created position of Climate Coordinator. The search for a Climate Coordinator is happening now.

  • All of New England experienced low temperatures and record breaking cold Friday Feb. 3, but I heard from several families in my church who were much more comfortable this year because they had accomplished some weatherization projects. You too can be more comfortable, save money on your fuel bill, and reduce emissions by weatherizing your home.  All our new England states have free programs for low-income residents and rebates for all. To learn more hit your state’s link at: https://www.neumc.org/creationcare. Or check out the Inflation Reduction Act here: https://www.rewiringamerica.org/IRAguide
What brings you joy? Accomplishing a goal? A walk in the woods? Time with people you enjoy? Taking care of the earth? Time in worship, Bible study, or prayer? May you find joy this month.
