Imagine No Malaria effort gains momentum at Annual Conference

The New England Conference has been ramping up a focused effort to support Imagine No Malaria. The conference has an Imagine No Malaria task force, and last week it was announced that Ms. Bonnie Marden is serving as field coordinator for this conference-wide campaign  (see

Imagine No Malaria was the key mission project at the New England Annual Conference sessions, with a number of events and opportunities for conference attendees to learn about and support the campaign, including:

A Display Table with information, resources, silent auction, Miles for Mission race info and sign-up, and ticket sales for the September 28, 2013 New England Revolution soccer game, with a portion of the ticket sales to benefit INM. Watch for more promotions for this exciting partnership, with ticket sales available online next week!

A Learning Center was held to provide an Imagine No Malaria overview and challeng: How Many Lives Will We Save? with Bishop Cliff Ives and the INM Team.

The Ordination Service Offering was designated for Imagine No Malaria, and raised more than $8,000.

The 3rd Annual Miles for Mission 5K Fun Run & Walk was a tremendous success. The Miles for Mission Race had 51 participants and collected $6,508 (after expenses). Another $1,000 was raised in a silent auction.  In addition, there are several hundred dollars still pledged, which we expect to receive in the days after Annual Conference. Additional “stats” include:

  • Top Church Fundraiser - Whitman UMC (Whitman, Mass) raised $2,121
  • Top Individual Fundraiser - Rev. Greg Smith (Shelburne, VT) raised  $721
  • More than $1,000 was raised directly from Conference attendees.

Conference-wide Reading Suggestions

Bishop Devadhar has invited the New England Conference to read one of the following three books (or all of them), if possible. During his Episcopal Address, Bishop Devadhar suggested that "Reading these will help facilitate important conversations on what we are called to be in this present age. These books challenge us to understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, and to demonstrate that leadership to “serve the present age” as Charles Wesley expressed it in one of his hymns."

The books are:

  1. When “Spiritual but Not Religious” is Not Enough: Seeing God in Surprising Places, Even the Church by Lillian Daniel (Jericho Books, 2013). This is a humorous and sincere book about people finding God in the most unexpected places: prisons, airports, yoga classes, committee meetings, and, strangest of all, right there in church.
  2. Building a Discipling Culture - How to Release a Missional Movement by Discipling People Like Jesus Did by Mike Breen and Steve Cockram (3 Dimension Ministries, 2011). This is a guide to overcoming our discipleship problem by making missional disciples like those we find in Scripture.
  3. The Missional Journey by Robert E. Logan (ChurchSmart, 2013). This book invites the church to be missional and dedicates a chapter showing how John Wesley gives us the greatest example of how to go about doing it.

Jung Sun Oh was recognized as the Ziegler Preaching Award recipient.

Patsy Frey-Davis gave a tremendous Laity Address at the Conference.
