Several offices in the New England Conference have been in conversation with each other and with SteepleCom in developing a relationship with the conferences and the churches.
Communication Office - The Communication Director and Director of Administration often heard from churches that have been approached by wireless companies. Our advice had always been to refer to the materials on the website of the General Council on Finance and Administration. GCFA recognizes that this kind of arrangement can be beneficial to the local church, but advised having a local attorney help watch over the church's interests.
Office of the Conference Chancellor - OUr Conference Chancellor William Hewig has helped review the signed agreement between the New England Conference and SteepleCom to be sure all is in accordance with the 2004 Discipline, and that church interests are safeguarded.
Office of the Treasurer - The Treasurer/Director of Administration brought the proposed agreement to the Trustees for review and advice. Once all was determined to be in order, the Treasurer signed the agreement on behalf of the conference.
Episcopal Office - Bishop Peter Weaver has been informed of progress of this agreement as it was prepared and executed.
We believe it is wise to work with professionals who can advocate for our local churches as they maximize the income derived from facilities on their properties, while insuring they do not get caught in agreements that limit future possibilities. The arrangements are made with wireless phone companies, wireless Internet companies, and with new enterprises related to governmental inter-agency communications.
