Habitat for Humanity in Merrimack Valley

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical housing ministry. Using donated supplies and volunteer labor, Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. The Merrimack Valley Habitat was founded in 1985, and has built or rehabbed 61 homes in Lawrence and surrounding communities for people in need of safe, decent, affordable housing. The homes are sold at cost and with no-interest mortgages to low-income families who spend hundreds of hours helping to build their own or another Habitat house.

There are a number of ways to volunteer:
  • Construction work on a project
  • In the office
  • As a Saturday or Thursday greeter and greeting the volunteers
  • Bringing coffee, snacks, or lunch to the construction sites.
  • Helping to organize the tools shed and warehouse.
  • Transporting materials between construction sites and the lumber yard.
Visit www.merrimackvalleyhabitat.org for more information on how to volunteer.

Youth Participation

STUDENT BUILD PROGRAM
In addition to the opportunities above, there is a program for youth in the Merrimack Valley Chapter! Student groups are invited to come build with Habitat one Sunday a month as part of the new “Student Build” program. This is a special time when young men and women 14 and older can be on-site, painting, installing vinyl siding, and doing other projects that don’t involve power tools or tall ladders, which are off-limits to youth under Massachusetts labor laws.

For information about how your school or church group can participate in Student Build, please contact Anne Broyles at 978-681-8858, extension 16, or e-mail abroyles@merrimackvalleyhabitat.org

NICKLES FOR NAILS
Help raise $125,000 to fund a youth-sponsored home with Nickles for Nails. Donating extra nickels (dimes, quarters, and dollars!) can make a life-altering difference for one deserving Habitat family. For more information on Nickles for Nails, visit http://www.merrimackvalleyhabitat.org/nickels.html
