Covenant: Nicaragua

Mission Statement

The Covenant between the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church and La Iglesia de Cristo de Nicaragua is to accompany one another in solidarity as a self-conscious response to the unjust and inequitable dichotomy between North and South, rich and poor. We do so for the sake of reclaiming human dignity and human rights--education, health care, a decent place to live, potable water, a caring community--for all persons.

and the Asociacion de Iglesias de Cristo de Nicaragua

Background

In 1986, the Nicaragua Covenant was established between the New England Conference of The United Methodist Church and La Asociacion de Iglesias de Cristo de Nicaragua (AICN), an indigenous Protestant denomination. The vision forged by the founders of this covenant was to accompany one another in solidarity in response to the unjust and inequitable dichotomy between North and South, rich and poor. We did this for the sake of reclaiming human dignity and human rights--education, health care, a decent place to live, potable water, a caring community--for all persons.

The success and growth of the original ideas have developed into a covenant that provides program support to the families of the churches that comprise

the AICN.  The backbone of our long and proud history can be directly attributed to the loyalty and dedication of the individuals and churches of the New England Conference that have provided financial assistance in support of programs that embody health care, education, children's advancement programs, and economic development of women.

Today, the Nicaragua Planning Committee is working on expanding the connections and missions of the New England Conference in Nicaragua, through new programs such as an independent Mobile Health Clinic, and working on building relationships with the Evangelical Methodist Churches in Nicaragua.

You Can Help

For more than 20 years, the Nicaragua Covenant has served the Nicaraguan people with critical health and education programs. Your generous support is critical.  Without it, the covenant will not be able to offer these programs and many of the children who are served will go without nutrition, medical and dental care, not to mention the spiritual nurturing and education that is an integral part of the Nicaragua Covenant.

Please take a moment to reflect on the past, the present, and the future. As you have been intentional about the connectional work of the conference by fulfilling your mission shares, we ask that you go one step further with a pledge of $500 to support the programs of the Nicaragua Covenant. Your gift will not only make a difference today, but will also be the impetus for the Nicaragua Covenant of tomorrow.

Sincerely yours,

Nicaragua Planning Committee:
Sandy Melius, Rev. Stephen Melius, Ann Kathi Peterson, Byron Champlin, Daniel Dolan, Tracy Duhamel, Gwen McGrath, Jim Ortolf, Sara Parker, Richard Rinker, Rev. William Taylor.
