New England churches’ insurance is compliant with 2016 Discipline

January 20, 2017

Churches in the New England Conference may have received a letter in mid-January 2017 from United Methodist Insurance that reads “New Book of Discipline: here is how to make sure you are compliant.”

This letter should not have been sent to New England Conference churches; it was intended only for churches that are not covered by a Conference-wide insurance program.

Conference Treasurer/Director of Admin. Services William Burnside wants to assure churches that our current insurance coverage is fully compliant with the Discipline and no action is necessary.

“I want to assure our churches that our property insurance unit plan meets or exceeds all coverage required by the Book of Discipline,” Burnside said. “While we believe this is the result of a miscommunication between UMI and the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA), I have talked to both the President of UMI and our GCFA liaison to express my displeasure regarding this mailing.”

The Conference Board of Trustees, Insurance Committee, and Burnside have written a letter to churches regarding the UMI communication. Read the letter here.
